I wanted to give you guys a more detailed description of what I’m doing (if you’re interested) here at Fort Scott. This is from an email I sent out to my family. I’ve had a very busy first week in Fort Scott and have learned a lot already! All the Park Rangers are really nice and helpful. Basically what I’ve been doing is reading orientation materials and getting to know my way around the site. Also this past week we had 2 Education Days where school groups came and we had 3 different stations teaching them about one of the time periods and key events that took place at Fort Scott (Permanent Indian Frontier, Bleeding Kansas, Civil War). On Friday I led 6 rotations about Bleeding Kansas. The kids read a script of an actual court case that occurred at Fort Scott and I give an introduction and conclusion. I think it went pretty well. Today was my first day this week and I work everyday until Sunday. I learned how to take light readings in rooms to check how much light is coming in so it can be monitored and certain items in a room moved if they’re getting too much sunlight. I also washed some artifacts and learned how the National Park Service cataloging system works and helped fill a research request. A research request would be if someone is wanting specific information about something that happened at Fort Scott or nearby we check the library to assist the person. The man today was interested in what surgeries were performed on soldiers after the Battle of Mine Creek October 24, 1863. So I got to search in the library and find some records that the doctors had kept about the particular wound (most were gun shot and you’d be surprised by how many were just where a soldier had accidentally dropped his own gun and it discharged) as well as what surgery, if any, was done. It was really interesting. I’ve been working open shifts 7-4, so I’ve been waking up about 5, which although it’s early I find that I like it. I’m not sure what’s happening the rest of the day, but there’s definitely plenty to keep me busy! No real exercise today, although I opened the site and late walked around and took light readings, so it was a lot of walking. I was tired this afternoon when I got home and took a bit of a nap and then ate and I’ve been trying to get some things checked off my list. But I did 80 minutes of Turbo Jam yesterday and will try to do some tomorrow too. Still been eating well, we had pizza for some high school kids today b/c they were doing a dress rehearsal type thing for education programs next week and I went home and made my own healthy lunch and wasn’t tempted (too much) by the pizza and Pringles! It’s really windy here and it keeps knocking on my windows. When I was in the historic buildings at work by myself and the wind was blowing and the floors were creaking it was a bit scary! Guess that’s enough for now. And I haven’t had a chance to comment on journals, but it’s almost bedtime and I still have a few more things to do. Will catch up with y’all tomorrow. Alaina
